What Does Is Mean To Be The Salt & Light?

What does it mean to be the Salt & Light?

At our market booths, we love creating a space where faith feels welcomed. One of the most meaningful parts of our shop is sharing biblical truth that encourages believers to live out their calling. Here’s a deeper look at what Jesus meant when He said we are the salt of the earth and the light of the world.

Salt in the Greek is the word “halas”. This word refers to salt that is used for seasoning, preserving, and even fertilizing in ancient times. Figuratively, it speaks of prudence, wisdom, and sound judgment. It protects, seasons, and preserves what is good. Salt also creates thirst and can irritate wounds (in a healing way). When it loses its savor and taste, it becomes useless and “trampled underfoot.”

As followers of Jesus, we’re called to preserve truth and goodness in a decaying world, bring flavor and wisdom to life, and make people thirsty for the living water of Christ.

The Greek word for Light is “phos”. It refers to light as illumination, radiance, and revelation. This specifically applies to the manifestation of God’s life and truth in your life. Light exposes darkness, guides the way, and brings visibility to what is good in the eyes of God.

Jesus says a city on a hill can’t be hidden, and no one lights a lamp to put it under a basket. Instead, “let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.”

Our number one goal at Proverbs & Pens will always be to encourage you in your walk with Christ! This verse is at the core of what we do and why we do it. Standing out can feel intimidating, but Jesus is the One who empowers us all to be bold and to walk confidently in the calling the Lord has given us

Lean on Him for grace, wisdom, and boldness in whatever area He has you in. We are all called to minister the Word of God to this broken world. We hope this is encouraging and empowering to you! We are meant to stand out, add flavor, and point others toward the true Light, Jesus!

Matthew 5:13-16 "You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt loses its flavor, how shall it be seasoned? It is then good for nothing but to be thrown out and trampled underfoot by men. You are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven."
